What happens when you combine a beautiful destination with amazing jazz music? An incredible vacation!
White sand beaches as far as the eye can see, luxury resorts that fulfill your every desire, and world-class archaeological sites worth flocking to – the pleasures of the Riviera Maya region of Mexico
are plentiful. Located near Cancun and Cozumel – but far less crowded – Riviera Maya boasts an enviable location along the country’s Caribbean coast along with loads of natural beauty.
Riviera Maya, Mexico isn’t just beautiful, the area is rich with history.
However, once you’re done exploring the area’s coral reefs, Mayan ruins, and top-notch restaurants, what’s a traveler to do? If you happen to be in the neighborhood this November, you’ll want to book your trip around the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, a free music extravaganza that brings jazz lovers to the beach in droves. This year’s event is set for Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28-30, giving families and friends a unique opportunity to get away and enjoy tacos instead of turkey for the holiday.
Great music with a great backdrop
The annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, which began in 2003, takes place in one of the most gorgeous settings imaginable – under the sun and stars on Playa Mamitas in Playa del Carmen, a charming town in Riviera Maya. Mamita’s Beach Club plays the gracious host of this popular party, with the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea serving as its backdrop. The super-chic club is located in the center of Playa del Carmen within walking distance of most of the area’s hotels, and there is no entry fee or tickets required for the festival.
The lineup is breathtaking as well, blending international jazz artists into a hot and spicy musical mix. The melodies get underway on Thursday, Nov. 28 with festival hosts Aguamala, a show-stopping local favorite that unites jazz, rock, funk, and regional Mexican music into an addictive, high-energy experience. Continuing the first day of the festival are Allan Holdsworth, a ground-breaking electric guitarist, and The Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Group directed by Brent Fischer, a world-renowned ensemble led by a celebrity producer who has worked with such artists as Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, and Usher.
Jazz guitarist Scott Henderson performs Nov. 29
Friday, Nov. 29 showcases five musical acts, including accomplished jazz guitarist Scott Henderson; former Parliament/Funkadelic drummer Dennis Chambers; pioneering electric bassist Jeff Berlin; award-winning pianist and composer Jim Beard; and Brazilian carioca artist Ed Motta.
The final day of the festival, Saturday, Nov. 30, goes out with a bang with Celso Piña (a.k.a. “The Accordion Rebel”); versatile jazz bassist Matthew Garrison; and the legendary, genre-defying Earth, Wind & Fire transforming Riviera Maya into a “Boogie Wonderland.”
